Please find below important information as we get closer to summer 4-H programs! Be sure to read things closely as not all events are ‘as usual”. Thanks and have a great spring!

4-H Club Pallet Contest
Attention Clubs: Don’t forget to make an entry in the Pallet Decorating Contest! Clubs can get a pallet through the Extension Office or obtain their own. Entries should be made as a team or club project. Use your imagination! Be Creative! Pallets will be displayed and silent auctioned at the fair. Decorated pallets will be judged at fair. Best decorated will receive 50% of the funds generated through the sale of their pallet. All silent auction funds generated at the fair will be used to support Honor Club Awards and camp scholarships. Contest guidelines and registration form click here. Entries Due June 19, 2021.

4-H Photo Contest
Any 4-H member wanting to make an entry into the 2021 4-H photo contest is welcome. Three categories include:

  • 4-H in Action
  • 4-H Selfies
  • 4-H Projects

4-H’ers may have as many as three entries so long as they submit each entry in a different category. Please call the Extension Office for more details or click here for 4-H Photo Contest Rules.

4-H Endowment Auction Items Needed
A silent auction is being sponsored by the Putnam County 4-H Council during the county fair. Items for the silent auction are being donated by clubs, volunteers and area organizations. The high bidder for each item will be contacted and arrangements will be made to exchange payment for items. Each 4-H Club in Putnam County is asked to donate one item for the auction. As a general guideline, the 4-H Council is asking that the value of the item be equal to a dollar or two per member. For example, if your club has 50 members, the value of the item should be around $50.00-$100. Items should be dropped off at the Extension Office no later than June 14, 2021. The earlier the better! Please show your support for the Putnam County 4-H Youth Program, visit the silent auction, have fun bidding and possibly win some great items.

THANK YOU for a successful 4-H Council Chicken BBQ
The 2021 4-H Chicken BBQ sold 900 meals. A big thank you to 4-H Council volunteers and Uncle Bucks Catering for helping make this year’s BBQ a success. All proceeds are used by Putnam 4-H Council to offset the costs of 4-H project books.

Jr. Fair Livestock Entry Forms
Remember that Jr. Fair Livestock entries are due June 4, 2021. Entry Forms can be found by Clicking Here. All 4-Her’s wanting to exhibit livestock at the fair MUST complete a Jr. Fair entry form. Forms should be completed using Jr. Fair Classes listed on pages in the back half of the Putnam County Fair Book. Please be sure to use the 2021 Fair Book when completing forms in order to get the correct class numbers. *NOTICE: All late fair entries will be considered ineligible for awards and will exhibit for a grade only!! A $10 per week late fee will be assessed for any entries turned in after the deadline.

4-H Senior Spotlights:
Parents, if you have a 2021 senior who is in 4-H we are highlighting them through our OSU Extension Facebook page and High School Senior Board in the Junior Fair Building during fair. Please send email to downing.310@osu.edu for more information.

Youth Quality Assurance:
Last day to complete Putnam youth YQA will be May 9, 2021. Must have done 45 days prior to fair. Note: The BQA/PQA online courses do not meet the Ohio Youth Food Animal QA certification requirement. QA calendar year (October 1st – September 31st).

Putnam County 4-H Camp is a GO!
The Putnam County 4-H Camp is scheduled for July 15-17 at 4-H Camp Palmer. Registration materials can be found HERE.  4-H Camp Registration and are due July 6. Campers can be dropped off at camp Thursday, July 15 from 11 to 11:30AM. Drop off at covered bridge. Campers only permitted beyond the covered bridge. Camper pick up is Saturday, 1PM- 2PM. We will be following Camp Palmer/OSU protocols as it relates to COVID19. This includes wearing masks, keeping youth in smaller groups/cabins and revamping large group camp activities.

4-H Camp Scholarships:
Camp Scholarships are being offered by Putnam County 4-H Council. Click here to download the 4-H Camp Scholarship Application form. Camp Scholarships are due May 15 to the Extension Office.

4-H Judging Notes
Special Interest Project Judging – Kalida High School, June 15th, 2021, 8:30AM – 3PM
All Special Interest/Home Ec Projects will be judged individually by experienced judges. Times are scheduled by clubs within each project area so be sure to check for all your times. When arriving at Kalida High School, please report to the Registration Table. There you will be given a Judging Sheet, location of the room, and complete instructions. 4-H Judging events will require masks and distancing protocols. Details about schedule will be released soon. If you have a conflict with the Kalida Special Interest Judging (because of vacation, camp, school, or church obligations) please call the Extension Office at 419-523-6294 and receive a link to submit your FLIPGRID Video as a make-up judging option. Remember if you complete your project through FLIPGRID you are ineligible for a county placing. All projects to be completed prior to fair start date.

Misc Project Judging - Merchants Building at Fair Grounds, June 16, 8:30AM - 3PM
All Misc Projects will be judged individually by experienced judges. Times are scheduled by clubs within each project area so be sure to check for all your times. When arriving at the Merchants Building, please report to the Registration Table. There you will be given a Judging Sheet, location of the room, and complete instructions. 4-H Judging events will require masks and distancing protocols. Details about schedule will be released soon. If you have a conflict with the Misc Judging (because of vacation, camp, school, or church obligations) please call the Extension Office at 419-523-6294 and receive a link to submit your FLIPGRID Video as a make-up judging option. Remember if you complete your project through FLIPGRID you are ineligible for a county placing. All projects to be completed prior to fair start date.

Livestock/Dog Skillathon Judging will be held on Thursday, June 10th from 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM at the OTTAWA K of C HALL located on 10759 Co. Rd H Ottawa.
PLEASE READ: 4-H Skillathon participants will be required to register for a time online. The link to sign up for a time slot will be posted soon. This will help us maintain attendees in the building as this judging event is large. Youth only will be permitted in building during the time of judging. Parents are asked to stay in parking lot please. All 4-H members enrolled in a livestock project/dogs will need to participate in a livestock skillathon judging. Members are responsible to bring their completed, up-to-date project and record book with them to judging. All members need to participate in the skillathon judging process in order to exhibit at the county fair. *No FLIPGRID option for livestock projects exhibiting at the fair*.

TSC Paper Clover Campaign
Shop TSC - The spring 2021 TSC Paper Clover campaign is underway. Dates for this year are April 28 – May 9th. You will have the opportunity to purchase a Paper Clover during your checkout, and funds generated at the Putnam County location come back to our local 4-H program! Be sure to ask them for a paper clover!

Taking a Pig to the Fair?
All pigs entered into the Junior Fair must be ractopamine free. Read more HERE. We will distribute the affidavits during skillathon judging along with the DUNF forms. Forms are also online. We will collect the completed affidavits and DUNFs at fair weigh in. Our market pig buyers will require this form in 2021.
